Whether it's advertising or branding that makes us laugh, think, or something we just find clever... you will find it here. Welcome to Fresh Media's Orange Slice.
Spamalot!
We didn't know this existed. Honest. It was a random Google search for something unrelated that caused us to stumble across "Spam Art". Yes-- that Spam, the canned precooked meat product that has been around since 1937.
It seems that people from all over have art contests to create the best Spam meat carvings. We're not sure if this artwork makes Spam more appealing or not, but we have to admit that you can create some very interesting artwork out of this 'mystery meat'.
Perhaps some of this artwork can be found in the Spam Museum? Yes-- that exists as well.
Reality Bites. Or Does It?
Love Reality TV? Hate Reality TV? No matter how you feel about Reality TV, it's hard not to appreciate a new series of posters created by a PBS station in New York City that negatively points a finger at this genre.
For the awareness campaign, the PBS station designed a series of fake Reality TV show posters with the stinging tagline "The fact that you thought this was a real show says a lot about the state of TV".
The interesting part of this campaign is that PBS certainly does achieve their goal of highlighting how ridiculous many Reality TV shows are these days. However, these shows are on the air because they are cheap to produce, and they get ratings. Which makes you question if the execution of these spoof posters is too good, and that the opposite of PBS's goal could happen. That is people will look at them and admit they actually would love to watch a show called "Knitting Wars". We know we would!
Dog DoDo + Direct Marketing = Results
In an attempt to get dog owner's to scoop up their pet's poop, the Brunete Council in Madrid Spain created a "mechanical" pile of poop that would zip around the sidewalks to get noticed. It was a very unique solution (as you will see in the video), which we're sure wasn't cheap to produce. The results of this gimmick, however, didn't last. After the novelty of this marketing stunt wore off, the un-scooped poop returned.
But how do you top a mechanical pile of poop? Through a good idea, data, and good ol'' direct marketing as displayed in this video. Mind you, the surprise in the box did play a roll in increasing the amount of poop picked up on the streets by 70% we're sure.
Say It With Bacon
"When words aren't enough... Say It With Bacon". This Oscar Mayer campaign is a perfect example as to how you can sell a product while still having fun. A smart idea with a great website and a better video... it's easy to say we are now completely craving bacon!
World's Largest Rubik's Cube Mosiac
For many, the Rubik's Cube was a central part of your childhood. Hours upon hours were spent trying to complete this classic combination puzzle. That is until you finally decided to cheat by peeling the stickers off. Or for those with less patience, literally smashing it apart and putting it back together "completed".
For those who have such memories, seeing this official Guinness World Record Breaking mosaic in Hong Kong made up of 85,794 individual Rubik's Cube puzzles is awe-inspiring. Over 13 feet high and 200 feet wide, this incredible work of art recreates the skyline of Macau, China from only Rubik's Cubes.
Mind you-- we can't verify if the 25 "cubers" who created this mural cheated by peeling the stickers of their Rubiks Cubes or not. We're expecting Guinness did that for us.
